Ruth E. Hess, 217 North Washington, died Saturday, May 31, at the Arkhaven Nursing Home. She was 84. she had been in declining health for six months. Mrs. Hess was born March 31, 1896, in Moran, the daughter of William T. and Martha Carmain Strong. Prior to her marriage to Henry R. Hess on June 3, 1922, in her parent's home, she was employed by the Newton Milling Company here.

From 1937 until the early 1950s the Hesses operated the H. R. Hess Feed Store. Mr. Hess died October 26, 1949, and after his death Mrs. Hess worked in the office at St. John's Hospital and for nine years was employed in the office of Dr. Lyle Schmaus. She then worked at the Allen County Hospital until she retired in 1975. Mrs. Hess was a member of the First Christian Church ; a member of the Dorothy Rebecca Lodge for more than 50 years, held all chairs and was past noble grand and she was also a member of Salem Chapter No. 4, Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Maurice(Dorothy)Wray, route 2 and Mrs. Delmar(Marion) Foster, Paola; two sisters, Ethel Strong and
Florence Strong, both of Iola; six grand children, four step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Glenroy Hess in 1971 and a sister, May Fuller in 1963.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the first Christian church. The Rev. Carlyle V. Barnard will officiate. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery. Memorials to the First Christian church may be left at the church or Friskel Memorial Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
