NEWS ARTICLE Iron River Reporter Dec [15-24] 1936 “Hit-and-Run Driver Crashes Into Kofmehl Car Near Death Scene”
In approximately the same spot as that on which Eldred Hawkins met death on US-2 one mile west of Iron River, Dr. W.J. Kofmehl, Stambaugh, was involved in an automobile accident Friday afternoon with a hit-and-run driver.
Kofmehl was driving west when he was compelled to stop for an Iron River township school bus just before the curve near Barlock’s filling station. The unidentified driver, in a late 1935 Chevrolet sedan, came upon him from the same direction from behind. Said to be driving at about 40 miles an hour, the unidentified driver struck the Kofmehl car in the rear, damaging it and tearing off a spring bumper which swung the third car around and headed it back to Iron River.
Without stopping, the driver continued in this direction and turned off at the road in the Hilltop addition. While the school bus was discharging pupils, no one was hurt. The hit-and-run driver disappeared before anyone could get its number.
