Sherman Lee Benton was the son of William Benton and Maude Louetta Hake. His paternal grandparents were John Benton who was born in August of 1849, in Missouri and died in 1921, and Harriet Evaline Hyde Benton who was born in November of 1853 and died in 1927. Sherman's maternal grandparents were George Abraham Hake and Sarah Box Hake.

He married Jeanette Lewis in about 1915. Jeanette was born on 10 October 1892, in Missouri and died in March of 1969. She last resided in Kansas City. Her parents were born in Missouri. In 1917, Sherman and Jeanette were living at 805 Cherry Street, in Kansas, City. Sherman was a stenographer for the Pack and Missouri Motor Company. In 1920 Sherman was a clerk in a canning company and in 1930, Sherman was a salesman.
