Dale Arnold Bergan, 85, of Loveland, Colorado passed away peacefully on October 6, 2008 in Windsor, Colorado after a long, diverse and full life.
Dale was born in Williams, Minnesota on January 6, 1923 the son of Martin Bergan and Jane Bridges Bergan. Dale grew up on the family farm in Lake of the Woods County and graduated from Williams High School in 1941. In 1942 he enlisted in the Marine Air Corps. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant after flight school in Pensacola, Florida. Dale was a flight instructor in the Marine Air Corps until his discharge in 1945.
In 1942, Dale met the love of his life, Wilma Mae Shetterly, at a Valentine's Day dance in Williams. They married in Pensacola, Florida in 1944. After his military discharge, Dale and Wilma returned to Lake of the Woods County and purchased farmland from a family friend, August Amundsen. August continued to live on the farm until his death. Dale was a successful farmer who loved farming and loved the land. When farming activities ended each fall, Dale, Wilma and children traveled to Lakeland, Florida to live until farming resumed in the spring.
While in Florida, Dale worked several winters for the Detroit Tigers baseball team at their spring training facility in Lakeland.
In 1961, Dale moved with his family to Spearfish, South Dakota. While in Spearfish he started a drywall business. Dale also continued farming operations in Minnesota during the growing season. While living in Spearfish, both Dale and Wilma earned a BA degree in education from Black Hills State College. Dale graduated Cum Laude. After graduation, they moved back to Williams, Minnesota and taught school in the Lake of the Woods School District until retiring in 1980.
After retiring, Dale sold the family farm to nephew Randy Bergan. Dale and Wilma then moved to Longmont, Colorado to be near their children and grandchildren. Dale spent several years substitute teaching in the St. Vrain Valley School District. In later retirement years, Dale and Wilma spent winters in Yuma, Arizona, before settling permanently in Loveland, Colorado. Dale and Wilma also spent many hours helping to construct an earth and cement "earthship house" in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains for his daughter, Susan and son-in-law Ed. He loved working on the house and also loved the mountains.
Dale was particularly skilled in the art of conversation. He could spend hours discussing politics, farming, or just reminiscing with family and friends. In addition to his family, his passions were fishing on Lake of the Woods, discussing politics with friends and family around a campfire, driving motorboat for family water ski shows, putting in a hard day's work, reuniting with old friends and students, picking wild blueberries in Minnesota and eating rhubarb pie.
Dale was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wilma Bergan of Windsor, Colorado, son Stephen Bergan and wife Maribeth of Windsor and daughter Susan Bristow and husband Ed of Longmont. Grandchildren include, Richard Ross, Michael Donner, Sarah Dore, Kathleen Toale and Kelsey Bergan. Great-grandchildren include: Andrea, Loren, and Robert Ross and Brynn, Nathan and Ian Donner. Numerous nieces and nephews as well as his dear in-laws, Bob and Joan Shetterly and Ben and Joy Shetterly and his life long friend, Les Bitzer, also survive Dale.
His parents, Martin and Jane Bergan and siblings, Albert Bergan, Glen Bergan, Earl Bergan and sisters Ellen Washburn and Elsie Lawin preceded him in death.
