Coy was the son of R.P. and Mary Broshears. He married Helen Taylor on April 27, 1885.

He was survived by his wife, sons Gurley, Chester, and Millard; daughters Clara, Bessie, Esther and Olive; and four grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his son Walter, who died in France while serving in World War I.
