James was a Union sympathizer and forced to escape Confederates who were out to hang him. He fled north, where he was shot and killed in Missouri on his way to Iowa. Grave site is unknown. Source Lena Bell Tarter, daughter of Susan A. Estes Tarter, James' sister.

Son of Thomas Estes and Emelia "Milly" Cates. In 1850 Jim was in California hunting for gold with his cousins, Archie & Tom Estes. James served in the Arkansas Legislature in 1857. In 1860 he was living in Fulton Co, Ark, Pleasant Ridge Township.

He was killed in Alton, Oregon Co, Mo., also a southern sympathizing town.
