Swedish Ambassador to the Court of the Sultan, at Constantinople (1782-1791). Since his resignation in 1791 he studied oriental literature at Smyrna, until his death. First husband of Catherine de Hochepied. In 1807 she married Jacob van Lennep. His father, Peter von Heidenstam (1708-1783) was personal physician to the Sedish Kong Adolf Fredrik and Professor of Medicine. He was born in Heide, Schleswig-Holstein, nowadays Germany, as Peter Petersen. In 1770 his name was legally changed to Peter von Heidenstein after being raised to the Swedish hereditary nobility.
