Andrew was the son of Archibald Henry Hamilton and Frances Calhoun; the great grand aunt of Vice-President John C. Calhoun. His parents migrated to this country in 1733 and were among the earliest settlers in Augusta County, VA.

He married Jane McGill, in 1764, Augusta County, VA.

He removed from Augusta County just after the Indian Massacre in 1762-1763.

Andrew fought throughout the Revolutionary War with General Andrew Pickens, also a native to Augusta County, Virginia. [Andrew Hamilton DAR Chapter, Abbeville, SC] and in the Battle of Kettle Creek, Georgia on 14 Feb 1779.

His name, along with a lists of all veterans who fought in this battle, is inscribed on the historical monument of the Battle of Kettle Creek which was erected in 1979.

In 1782, he served in the expedition against the Cherokee Indians. After the war he gave long and valuable service in the South Carolina Legislature, and held other positions of trust and honor.

His estate was probated on 09 Feb 1835
