SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Rev. Margaret Jean Chapman Dayton, 88, went into the arms of her Lord Jesus Christ on Feb. 8, 2008, at the Wesley Health Center in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Until 2000, she resided in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and spent winters in the Wesleyan Village, Brooksville, Fla., for over 23 years.
Margaret Jean Bennett, also known as Marjean by personal choice, was born in Brant Lake, N.Y., on April 16, 1919. She was the daughter of John and Kate (Bolton) Bennett.
She graduated from Houghton College Bible School in 1940. She was an ordained minister serving in the Champlain District (today the Eastern New York/ New England District) of the Wesleyan Church for 68 years. Her ministry also included serving as an evangelist, pastor and music minister. She was a member of the Plattsburgh Turnpike Wesleyan Church at the time of her death.
Marjean was a devoted and dedicated servant of God as well as a faithful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She will be missed by all of her friends and extended family.
Survivors include her special nephews and niece- Donald Winslow and wife Norma of Lake George, N.Y., Richard Winslow of Denver, Colo., Robert Winslow of Hudson Falls, N.Y., Bruce Winslow and wife Alice of Columbia, S.C., John Mahoney of Palm Springs, Calif., Donald Mahoney of Friends Lake, N.Y., James Mahoney of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Deborah Rayfield Hawley of Welcome, Md.; stepsons- Donald Chapman and wife Diana of Hernando, Fla., Rev. Harold Chapman and wife Marybelle of Cincinnati, Ohio, Roger Dayton and wife Dale of Corinth, N.Y.; stepdaughters- June (Chapman) Hartman and husband Clifford of Queensbury, N.Y., Rebecca (Chapman) Potter and husband Robert of Brooksville, Fla., Betty (Dayton) Orton and husband Ramon of Queensbury, N.Y., and Rev. Nanette (Dayton) Humbert and husband Rev. Leonard of Alton, N.Y.; stepdaughter-in-law-, Sue (Chapman-Bromley) Patnode of Beekmantown, N.Y.; and many step grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
Marjean was predeceased by her husband- Rev. Howard Chapman (1952-1975) and Chester (Chip) Dayton (1982-2005); sisters- Elizabeth Winslow and Katherine Mahoney; stepsons- Edwin Chapman, Arland Chapman; stepdaughter, Pauline (Chapman) Streeter; stepdaughter- Mary Lou Dayton.
Friends may call Thursday, Feb. 14 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 69 Court St., Plattsburgh, N.Y.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb.15, 2008, at the Turnpike Wesleyan Church.
Burial committal will be in the spring at Corinth Rural Cemetery, Corinth, N.Y.
Her parents were John Bennett and Kate Bolton. She did not bear any children. She was an ordained clergy in the Wesleyan Methodist Church.
