Alvin was born the son of the late Oliver and Maggie Black McSwain.
He was a life-time member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, a deacon, former chairman of deacons, president of Hugh Helm's Sunday school class, choir member for 63 years, loved to play his harmonica at church .Alvin was retired from Dora Yarn Mill, where he was oiler and watchman and retired warehouse foreman at Carolina Freight. Farming was his favorite past time and pleasure.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Dellinger McSwain, in 1995; eight brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Summey McSwain, of the home; daughters, Martha Hendrick and special friend, Sam Beam, Margaret Sigmon and husband Richard, all of Cherryville; sons, A. L. McSwain Jr., and wife, Shirley, David McSwain and wife Phyllis, all of Cherryville; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral: Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Key and Kenneth Gibson officiating.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
