Israel married 1) Nora Mulliken, and 2) Mattie May Holloway.
Israel was the first son of Robert Tillman Hemphill and Alice Caroline (Canaan) Hemphill. The tombstone says he was born in 1868, but he was age one on the 1870 Census, so he may have been born in 1869.

Note: There appears to have been an error on his tombstone. Israel was named after his father and grandfather, Samuel Corydon Hemphill, as far as his middle name was concerned.

Zoe Tom

Hi Zoe my name is Jerry E. Hemphill of Michigan, I am the son of Jack Alonzo Hemphill, grandson of Robert Alonzo Hemphill, Israel 's first born son with Nora Mulliken. I stumbled upon your genealogy report on the Hemphill family tree and enjoyed it very much.

After Nora died and Israel moved to Mississippi, Lon and Mary took in his three children and raised them. When my grandfather married he moved back to Freemont, Michigan and opened a barber shop. He then moved in with Lon and Mary with his wife Mildred and three of his children, my father being one of them.

My father has many memories of Lon wearing his civil war uniform on every forth of July parade. My father is still alive at age 94, his memory is fading fast. Mary and Patricia, Israel's last grandchildren from Michigan are also still living.

My father lived with Lon and Mary for several years and I have Mary's family Bible that she gave to him. She entered every birth, wedding, marriage and death of family members and my father kept it up to my children. I found some pictures of Israel and some articles of Iva, Nora's sister and I thought you might enjoy them.

I also have a Civil War medal from The Grand Army of the Republic that belonged to Lon. My grandfather died in 1940, eight years before I was born and since Israel moved to Mississippi long before my father was born I knew very little of the family. My two surviving aunts were only six and seven when my grandfather died, so they know less than I do. Thank you for doing all the hard work, I now know more about my family then I ever did. I would love to hear from you

Take care
