Maj. William Robert "Bob" Hale, Ret., 83, loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully with his family at his side February 11, 2009. He was born in Waco, Texas, and then moved to Austin, TX where he graduated from Austin High School early to enter the United States Marine Corps.

After returning to the states from the South Pacific invasions and occupation duty at Nagasaki, Japan on Christmas day 1945, he entered the University of Texas pledging Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He started his US Air Force career at Randolf AFB, TX (Pilot training school, Class 49-B), then onto Advanced Pilot Training at Barksdale AFB, LA where he graduated top 5% of his class as a 2nd Lt. in the Regular Air Force.

He later returned to Randolf as an instructor pilot then met and married Helen McMullen of Austin on May 20, 1950. Following many base assignments and tours overseas, he retired from the Air Force and settled down in Jacksonville Beach in 1965, where he was the owner of American RV for 12 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Helen Hale; his only three children, Linda (Rick) Hunt Martin, Leslie (Mick) Hale DuRocher, and Lisa (Brad) Salzmann; grandchildren, Josh Mele, and Amanda and Ashlei Hunt; great grandchildren, Mackenzie Hunt, and Michaela and Noah Begue; brother-in-law, Franklin (Carolyn) McMullen; nephews, Mark (Suzie) McMullen and Matthew (Lisa) McMullen; cousins, Tom (Ana) Stanford, John (Sara) Stanford and Shirley Slaughter. He was predeceased by his parents, William Homer Hale and Johnie Tilley Hale of TX.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, February, 16, 2009 in Quinn-Shalz Family Funeral Home and from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 17 in First Christian Church of Neptune Beach. The funeral service will held at 11:00 a.m. following the visitation. Interment will be in Jacksonville National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice of NE FL, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jax., FL 32257.
