Catherine O'Shea was born in County Kerry, Ireland. She immigrated to the United States in about 1855. While in New York she met and married Martin James Becker in 1857. They migrated to Kentucky and then to Missouri before settling in the Atchison, Kansas area.

Martin and Catherine had 11 children: Julia Matilda (married Jeremiah Michael McCarthy), Henry J. (became a Catholic priest), Jeremiah Michael (married Catherine Elisabeth Dooley), Martin James II (married Alice Jane Carrigan), Hanorah A. (married Thomas Roger Mullins), Mary Francis (married Peter Waltersor Wolters), Catherine (married Joseph Henry Prohaska), Elizabeth, Theola, John and Helen Johanna (married Henry J. Klein).
