Edward Kent Buker, Sr., was born about 1842 in Sagadahoc County, Maine. In August 1861, he enlisted in Company E, 7th Massachusetts Infantry, serving as a cook in a hospital unit. He mustered out August 1864. He is said to have lived with an Indian woman in Muskogee, Oklahoma Territory; at that time, Muskogee was Creek Indian territory. He was in the Salt River Valley by 1871, when he became one of the original investors in the Monterey Ditch Company. He was the first postmaster of Mill City (now east Phoenix) and was mentioned in several Territorial newspaper articles during the 1870s. He married Laura Moore in 17 June 1874, by whom he had a son, Edward Kent Buker, Jr. He and Laura later divorced. In 1883, Buker and his partner Thomas DeSpain leased land for a fruit orchard, vineyard and alfalfa field. The venture appears to have been successful, as he bought additional land thereafter. Buker married Eliza Ann Howard, a widow, on 26 June 1889 in Phoenix. They had several more children. In 1898, Buker applied for and was granted pension #1204599. He died 13 Oct 1907 of cancer. His widow Eliza lived until 1947.
