Herbert was a blacksmithy and farmer. He first worked for G.W. Townsend who owned a Blacksmith Shop located in the GAR Building in Westmorland, Kansas. This is where he met Lottie his future wife. She was the daughter of GW and Mary. It is said that she baked cookies to take out to the Blacksmith Shop on a regular basis. Later after their marriage "Hub" and Lottie lived on Hunters Island and became quite famous for his watermelons, especially his Yellow Watermelon.
