The Altus Times-

Mrs. G.S. (Sophia) Smith, 94, died Wednesday at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tims Chapel of Memories with Rev. Robert DeMoss officiating. Burial will be at the Restlawn Cemetery.
Born Jan. 7, 1884 at Bentonville, Ark., she came to Jackson County in 1904. She married G.S. Smith on Dec. 12, 1902 near Vernon, Texas. He died April 7, 1963. She was a member of the Elmer First United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Ernest Mabry, Altus, Mrs. Fred Mabrey, Sumerton, Ariz., Mrs A.J. Tomlinson, Concordia, Kans., Mrs. Douglas Simmons, Houston, Texas and Mrs. Victor Silvak, Lawton; two sons, Carl of Altus and W.C. of Crowell, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Lucy Ross of Amarillo, Texas.

Note: George, Sophia, and their baby, Opal survived the 1905 tornado which destroyed their farm and nearly wiped the town of Snyder, Oklahoma off the map. The Smiths rebuilt their farm and raised 5 daughters and two sons.
