US Congressman. His family settled in Georgia and after completing his education Cobb joined the Army as an Ensign, advancing to Captain before he resigned his commission in 1806. After leaving the Army he owned and operated "Cherry Hill", a plantation near Louisville, Georgia. In 1806 he was the successful Democratic-Republican nominee for a seat in the US House of Representatives and served two full terms and part of a third, March, 1807 until his resignation in October, 1812. Cobb left Congress to return to the Army as a Captain for the War of 1812, afterwards resuming management of Cherry Hill, where he died after a brief illness. Howell Cobb was the uncle of House Speaker, Governor, Treasury Secretary and Confederate General Howell Cobb and Confederate General Thomas R.R. Cobb.
