Vernon G. Chase was born in Artesian, SD to Fred C. & Jennie A. (Gibbs) Chase, both originally from Michigan. He had two sisters: Bessie Lamb (1886-1984) and Clara Elliott (1889-1939). Vernon graduated from Yankton High School (SD) in 1909. Around 1912, he moved with his family to Coronado, CA where his father was a rancher.

Vernon entered the service March 1st, 1918 at Rockwell Field, San Diego, CA. He was sent to March Field in Riverside, CA on May 1st, 1918 and to Officer's Training Camp at Camp Taylor in Louisville, KY on November 13th of the same year. In December 10th, he died of pneumonia at the Base Hospital at Camp Taylor. - information provided by his sister, Clara Chase Elliott, January of 1920.
