"In 1847 when Bernhard Heinrich Stall was 16 years old, he left his home in Detmold, Prussia and emigrated to the United States. He had left his home and family for political reasons. He arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana penniless and family legend had it that he made his first American dollars by swimming across the Mississippi River on a bet. He came from a family of cobblers, specializing in fancy boots and he worked his trade in New Orleans. The monies he made he sent back to Detmold to pay the way for his brother Augustus to join him. Both of them worked to bring the third brother Julius to New Orleans. Their mother having lost three sons to America, on her death-bed, made her youngest son promise that he would never leave, so the last brother never came to this country. Bernhard moved his boot-making trade to North Louisiana in 1853. He and his brothers established a shop in Sparta. Bernhard later moved his shop to Mt. Lebanon because stage lines came through that town and this made for a much more prosperous economy for his trade. Augustus continued along with Julius to run the shop in Sparta until Julius went to war."
