Seborn Joseph "Joe" Pritchett was born to Mip Katherine McMillan and Seborn Pritchett around 1846. Marriage records reflect that his parents married January 3, 1837 in Monroe County, Alabama.

Census records conflict on whether Seborn was born in Georgia or Alabama. His mother, whose grandfather, Gilbert McMillan, had migrated from Scotland, was born in Georgia. The senior Seborn Pritchett, his father, was born in Alabama. Seborn Joseph Pritchett was their fourth child and first born son. During his life, he assumed the use of his middle name, Joseph, as transcribed on his gravestone and noted in other records.

It is unknown when Seborn began the use of Joseph, or Joe, as his preferred name. A Joseph Pritchett is recorded to have served the Confederacy as a private in the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment, having musted in at Perote, Bullock County, on March 11, 1862. His age was noted as 24. There is no way to confirm with certainty this soldier was Seborn Joseph Pritchett, though possible, as Clarke County contributed 10 companies totaling approximately 1,100 men to the Confederacy.

Between the 1860 and 1870 census, Seborn's father passed, leaving his mother widowed. Seborn was 21 years of age at the 1870 census. His widowed mother had moved from Grove Hill to Good Springs.

Gravesite Details

Though Seborn's grave stone notes his birth year as 1856, it should read 1846. Also, the earliest census (1850) and latest census (1900) note his birthplace as Georgia. In all other census years, his birthplace is noted as Alabama.
