Samuel H was born to Samuel S. and Clarissa (nee Hewitt). He married Ellen Rutter, born in Pittsburgh on 8/14/1864. The Baptist ceremony took place at 646 N. 8th St.

Samuel was 62yo when he died. His occupation is listed as shoemaker. His place of death is listed as Hope St, where he was living, however he was buried from 934 New Market St, where Ellen was living. They were obviously separated at the time of his death. Cause of death is Chronic Nephritis Brights, with a contributing factor of Cardiac Weakness. He was buried in the American Mechanics Cemetery at 22nd and Diamond Sts. Samuel, along with several other Smalley's were removed from this cemetery in 1951 and re-interred at Philadelphia Memorial Cemetery in Frazier, PA. (The cemetery was removed to make room for a housing project)

As mentioned above, Ellen and Samuel were not living together at the time of his death. In the 1888 Phila. city directory, Ellen is listed as a dressmaker living at 723 Julia St. In the 1894 directory, Ellen is living at 721 New Market St and lists herself as a widow, even though Samuel is living right around the corner at 141 Brown St.

Samuel and Ellen had six children: Reubin, Mary, Enola F. Enola C, Gertrude, and Charles G.
