Mary Elizabeth Smith was born 30 June 1848 in Baltimore County Maryland (according to her death certificate), the daughter of Jesse Smith and Rachael Elizabeth Hutson. The census of 1850 has her with her parents and brothers in 20th Ward of Baltimore p. 258. She was 2 years old. Her father was listed as a merchant.

She was loved by the whole community and there were two obituaries, both clipped from unknown papers: The first one was from a Westminster paper as Jesse lived in Westminster.
“Mrs. Mary E. Barnes (1907), Mrs. Mary E. Barnes, wife of Mr. Benj. Franklin Barnes died suddenly of heart failure at her home near Lisbon, Howard Co. Tuesday, 8th in her 59th year. Mrs. Barnes was a sister of Mr. Jesse Smith, and sister-in-law of Mrs. Rev. Reuben Kolb of this city, a niece of Mrs. Elias Read and Mrs. Henry Westaway near Carrolton, and of Mrs. Washington Ridgely, near Eldersburg, this County. She is survived by her husband and the following children; Mrs. Florence Harrison near St. Michael’s, MD, (Talbot Co.); Miss Ella Barnes, Hawkinsville, GA; Mrs. James Lemon, near Lisbon; Misses Clara and Burnice and Messrs. Edgar and Bennie Barnes, at home. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters; Samuel, of Baltimore; Jesse, of this city; Mrs. Emma Adrian; Mrs. Laura Jackson; Mrs. Ella Metz; Mrs. Frances McGill; of Baltimore. Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church, Lisbon, Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. Tolly Marsh, pastor of Patapsco circuit, assisted by Rev. Nowlin, of the M.P. Church, Lisbon, Interment was in McKendree Cemetery, near Cooksville, where the burial service was read by Rev. E. E. Shipley, a former pastor of the deceased."

“Lisbon, Mary 16, 1907; Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Barnes, wife of Mr. Benjamin F. Barnes, of near Lisbon, died May 8, at her home near here from sciatica neuralgia. She was 58 years of age. Mrs. Barnes was raised and educated in Baltimore City, she married and came to Howard County to live where she spent the latter part of her life, she is highly respected as a good Christian woman and will be greatly missed in her home and community. She is survived by her husband and seven children. Mrs. Lawrence Harrison of Eastern Shore Maryland: Mrs. James Lemon of Lisbon; Misses Ella, Clara and Burnice Barnes and Edgar and Bennie Barnes. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church at Lisbon, on Friday, May 10th at 3 o'clock. Interment in the McKendree Cemetery near Cooksville, Rev. J. T. Marsh and Rev. C. P. Nowlin, officiating. Mr. B. W. Bowman, of Poplar Springs had charge of the funeral.”
