James was born in Amelia County, VA, the son of James & Martha Frances (Graves) Pritchett. He appears to have been orphaned early in life and by age 7 was living in Matoaca with a Graves family. In December 1876, he married Emma E. Tucker, daughter of Woodlief & Frances Tucker. James and Emma had 13 children but 3 died young. Emma died between 1900 & 1903. The story is told that at the time of Emma's death, James was very ill and couldn't leave his bed. He watched his wife's burial thru the window of his bedroom.
James remarried in January 1904. His second wife was Fay Zipporah Reams. He and Fay had at least 3 more children before his death in 1922.
James's stone is the only one in Pritchett family graveyard.
