Dortha Jean Merriman, longtime resident of Holdenville, passed away in Batesville, Arkansas on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at the age of 87 years.

Dortha was the daughter of James Morgan Callaway & Mary Dollie (Pugh) Callaway, born on October 14, 1929, in Holdenville, Oklahoma. She was brought up in the Hulsey community and attended Hulsey elementary schools, and was a graduate of Moss High School.

She was married to Audy Merriman in Holdenville on April 10, 1946, and with the exception of a short time spent in California, they lived their entire married life in Holdenville. They owned and operated Audy’s Auto Trim for more than forty years and upholstered thousands of vehicle seats and pieces of furniture. They were blessed with 53 years together before Audy passed away in 1999.

Dortha was a true homemaker, and loved caring for her family. She was an accomplished seamstress also, and enjoyed sewing for many customers in the community. She was a member of the Capitol Heights Missionary Baptist Church for more than forty years, and she was a dedicated and very active member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She very much enjoyed road trips, and she absolutely loved fishing. She loved camping and having family get togethers at Holdenville Lake. She loved her family and friends and loved to help other people, and often stayed with folks who were sick or recovering from surgery. She was a very giving person, very generous with her time and whatever else she had to give.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James & Mary Callaway; her husband, Audy Merriman; one granddaughter, Angie Gilbert; two infant great great granddaughters, Emma Lynne and Aaliyah Jade; five sisters: Gladys Lock, Millie Lock, Tennie Lock, Rena Merriman, and Jocie McBride; five brothers: Glen Callaway (died in World War II in France), Pat Callaway, Lenard Callaway, Emet Callaway, and Bud Callaway.

She is survived by five children: Andy Merriman (Sandy) of Marietta, Gary Merriman (Vanessa) of Holdenville, Tammy Williams (James) of Batesville AR, Danny Merriman of Holdenville, and Michael Merriman of Cromwell; 21 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren; two sisters, Lennie Noblett of Elmore City, and Wilma Robins of Tulsa; numerous nieces and nephews, a host of other relatives, and many friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 6, 2017, 10:00 a.m. at Capitol Heights Missionary Baptist Church, and Dortha will be laid to rest at Holdenville Cemetery. Rev. Jim Crawford is the officiating minister.

Pallbearers are Robert Marsh, Robert Wayne Merriman, Robert Keith Merriman, Don Merriman, Donnie Ray McBride, and Jonathan Lock. Dortha’s grandsons are honorary pallbearers.
