Mary Jo Moxey, 83, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at her home at Chateau Girardeau.


She was born Oct. 16, 1925, in St. Louis to Daniel Russell and Josephine Osborne Pratt. She is survived by her husband of five years, Dr. Ken Moxey.


Other survivors include her son, Tim Ludwig of Nixa, Mo., and granddaughters Jennifer Erin Shemwell and husband Andy Shemwell of Hopkinsville, Ky., Heather Ashley Ludwig and boyfriend Daniel Kohl of Springfield, Mo.


Also surviving are stepchildren Bonnie White, Ernie Moxey and Gayle Reeves as well as Kim LeCroy, Debbie Hinman, Doug Kaempfer, Stacey Blunk and Chris Kaempfer.


A sister, Pat Mueller of St. Louis, and a brother, Dr. John Harvey Pratt of Tumwater, Wash., also survive.


Mary Jo moved to Cape Girardeau at the age of 11 and, after graduating from Central High School and Southeast Missouri State Teacher's College, she became a teacher in the Cape Girardeau school system for a total of 27 years serving at Lorimier, Washington, and Jefferson elementary schools as well as Jackson Junior High School.


Mary Jo was an active member of First Presbyterian Church since 1948, where she taught Sunday school for 28 years and was a member of the choir for 30 years. She was president of the Women of the Church and worked with various church camps for 10 years.


Mary Jo remained a member of the Missouri State Teacher's Association, the Cape County Retired Teachers, the Historical Association of Greater Cape Girardeau, the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and was a Charter Member of Alpha Delta Kappa. She also volunteered for Southeast Missouri Hospital and entertained as a professional clown for the We Can Weekends activities for the hospital.


She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband Roy Ludwig and her late husband David Kaempfer.


Visitation will be from noon until service time Monday at Ford and Sons Funeral Home.


The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Kabo officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.


Memorials should be made to First Presbyterian Church of Cape or to the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.
