Springfield, Ills., Aug. 15. -- William T. Beekman, a prominent resident of Petersburg, died yesterday at his home in that city. He was 84 years old. Together with former Governor Richard Yates he built the Petersburg and Tonico railroad, which was afterward sold to the Chicago and Alton.

He came from New Jersey to Menard County at a young age.
Mr. Beekman was a well known contractor and builder.
For many years, he was the superintendant at the Woolen Mills. He was a projector of the Tonica and Petersburg railroad, which became a part of C. & A. railroad, and was general superintendant.
It was also stated that Mr. Beekman was an intimate friend of Abraham Lincoln.
