He graduated from Georgetown Prep in Washington, DC and from the University of New Haven. Gilbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a long time board member of The Marlin Companies.
In his early years, Gilbert was a portrait photographer and over time he generously supported and served on the boards of many philanthropic organizations, including the Neighborhood Music School, the New Haven Symphony, Long Wharf Theater, the New Haven Museum and Historical Society, the Community Soup Kitchen and the New Haven Preservation Trust. He also supported Yale New Haven Hospital and Easter Seals.
A tall, distinguished gentleman with white hair, Gilbert delighted in riding his bicycle everywhere and was a fountain of information regarding New Haven history. Gilbert loved music and was a wonderful pianist as well as our family historian and movie maker. He provided us with many happy hours of entertainment.
He is survived by his twin brother Frank (Joan); and his loving nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Lynch Strom (Ernest), Ward J. Doonan (Cindy), Margaret Kenna (Frank McGowan), Cynthia K. Mullins, Frank Kenna III (Kimberly), H. Robert Kenna (Karen), Christine Kenna; and his godson Matthew Gilbert Kenna (Janet). Gilbert was predeceased by his brother Roger Kenna; and sisters, Elizabeth K. Lynch and Anita K. Doonan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 10 a.m.
Interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, with a reception at the New Haven Lawn Club to follow.
