Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Dec 28 in the Bedford Ward LDS Chapel for Mrs Susan Carnelia Nelson, 83, widow of the late Charles H. Nelson with Bishop Norville Fluckiger in charge. Mrs Nelson died Sunday in an Ogden hospital after a short illness.
Funeral speakers were Bishop Stanley Rose of Ogden, Ernest Wolfley of Bedford and Bishop Fluckiger. The opening song "One Sweetly Solemn Thought," was sung by the choir and vocal solos were sung by Royal B. Preston and Ernest Turner. Prelude and postlude music were played by Leonore Fluckiger.
Burial was in the Thayne Cemetery under the supervision of R.C. Heiner and the Schwab Mortuary. The gave was dedicated by Simpson Hymas.
Susan Cornella Nelson was born Oct 7, 1872 in Hyde Park Utah, a daughter of James A Hymas and Sarah Evans Hymas. At the age of eight she moved with her parents to Liberty, Idaho. There she grew up and married Charles Henry Nelson in the Logan LDS Temple Nov 1, 1883. To this union 15 children were born six boys and nine girls. she was a diligent worker in the LDS Church. She was chorister of the Liberty Ward for 14 years.
In 1902 she moved with her husband and four children to Star Valley settling in Thayne. There she was secretary and treasurer of the Relief Society for three years, was counselor in the YWMIA for four years and served as president of the Relief Society from 1913 to 1917 at Thayne.
With her husband and family she later moved to Bedford where she resided until just before her death.
She excelled in handiwork and made many beautiful pieces which won prizes at the Lincoln County Fair. Being of a very artistic nature, she created unusual and beautiful pieces of art. Her home was beautiful with her handiwork and flowers, which she loved.
Her husband died in July 1951 and four of her children also preceded her in death--James and Sybil Nelson with died in infancy and Pearl Robinson and Sarah Henry.
She is survived by five sons and six daughter: Sterling and Wan Nelson, Bedford; Reed Nelson, Kaysville, Utah; Max H. Nelson, Auburn; Ford Nelson, Downey, Idaho; Mrs and Maud Merritt Salmon Idaho; Mrs Ruth Rose, Ogden; Mrs Merle Schiess, Freedom; Mrs Nan Hughes, Layton, Utah; Mrs LaRue Campbell and Reah Wake, Salt Lake City. Also surviving are 41 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and the following brother and sisters: James and Lyman Hymas, Liberty, Idaho; Ernest Hymas, Tooele, Utah; Simpson Hymas, Grace Idaho and Mrs Jennie Dore, Venice, Calif.
