Harvey was born at Guilford, Connecticut in 1797 to James and Leah (Stone) Bradley. At the age of seven his parents moved to East Bloomfield, New York where Harvey grew up and married Miss Maria Rose in 1817.
Harvey and Maria made their home in East Bloomfield until 1830 when they removed to Michigan as early settlers of sec. 11 in Plymouth Twp. (which later became 'Northville'). Harvey S. Bradley filed a land patent in Northville (then known as Plymouth Township) in 1826 about 3 years after the first land patents in the area.
Harvey and Maria were prominent members of the Presbyterian church.  Their 60th Wedding anniversary was noted in the local newspaper as follows: "Marriage Anniversary -- To the Editor of the Northville Record:
The sixtieth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey S. Bradley was celebrated at their residence in Northville, on Friday, Nov. 2nd. Their children and grandchildren and a few neighbors and friends, numbering about forty, were present, and all enjoyed themselves in a very pleasant and satisfactory manner. After refreshments were served -- the table being loaded with an abundance of sweet and good things -- the time was spent in social enjoyment.
Among the presents was a large elegantly bound "Centennial Bible," by the children, a large easy chair, by the grandchildren, and a very nice shawl for Mrs. B., from her eldest son. The presentation was made by the Rev. James Dubuar in a few very appropriate remarks, and a reply by Father Bradley in a very happy manner, The Rev. Mr. Gelstou also made an excellent little speech.
Mr. and Mrs. Bradley were married in East Bloomfield, N.Y., in 1817. They removed with their family to Michigan in 1830 and located on section 11 in the town of Plymouth, and commenced clearing up and improving a heavily timbered farm on which he resided for 20 years. This is now known as the "Shoesmith farm" and is considered one of the best farms in the town. They have had ten children, six of whom are now living. There were present at this family gathering Horace Bradley, of Ovid, Clinton county, Mich., Geo. E. Bradley and Mrs. D. Clarksn, of this place. Of grandchildren there were eight, and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Bradley is in his 81st year, is smart, and can see to read well without glasses. Mrs. Bradley is in her 79th year, and with the exception of a little lameness caused by an accident a few years ago, is as smart and active as most women of sixty.
They have 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren living.
