Carmen Maria Ayala Vega Nix was born in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, on February 13, 1931, and was the first child of Jose Ayala & Lola Vega. She attended private Catholic Schools in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, before following her Aunt Mary Vega Nix, to Oklahoma to visit. She loved it so much in the USA, that she didn't return to Puerto Rico to live. She later met and married Foy Garland Nix on January 29, 1950 in Hinton, Oklahoma. He was the love of her life, best friend, steadfast partner and care giver of 59 years. After the birth of their children, Carmen received her advanced degree in cosmetology at Paul's Beauty College in Oklahoma City. Carmen spent the next twenty-five years as a talented and sought after hair stylist in Hinton, Weatherford and Oklahoma City. She retired to help Garland work in the family business, Garland's Dairy Boy, in Weatherford, Oklahoma. In 1988, they retired and moved to Oklahoma City to be closer to family. Carmen loved her children and adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carmen is preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters. She is survived by three brothers, Joe Ayala and Ramon Ayala of Puerto Rico, Reuben Ayala of Germany and two sisters Myrna Ayala of New Jersey and Aida Milligan of Tishomingo, Oklahoma. She is survived by her loving husband of the home, Foy Garland, their five children: Linda Black and husband Bill, of Oklahoma City; Tommy Nix and wife Charla of Sayre; Janet Stone of Edmond; Teresa Wilson and husband Dathan, of Stillwater; and Von Nix and wife Cheryl of Edmond. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Tabitha Teasley MuCuan and husband Stuart of Oklahoma City, Tonya Wheeler and husband Cleve of Piedmont, SoRay Carter of Piedmont, Granger Nix of Sayre, Jason Stone and wife Andrea of Edmond, Chad Stone and wife Kim of Edmond, Shane Stone of Edmond, Allison Wilson Keys and husband Matt of Stillwater, Aaron Wilson of Wichita, Kansas, Trevon Nix of Norman, and Jordan Nix of Edmond. Her precious eleven great-grandchildren are: Dillan and Quent Wheeler of Piedmont; Mackenzie and Peyton McCuan of Oklahoma City; Carter Reed, and Blakelee and Carson Carter of Piedmont; Ian and Sara Stone of Edmond; and Lindsay and Lance Stone of Edmond. She is also survived by many others around the world. Carmen joined God and many loved ones on Sunday, February 22, 2009, at the age of 78 at 12:02 P.M., with Garland & Linda by her side.

After several years of failing health, Carmen lost her battle at Select Specialty Hospital. She had been constantly surrounded around the clock by her devoted and loving family, who had kept a constant vigil by her side. Carmen's actual cause of death was genetic famial liver disease from Spain Ancestoral Heritage where her Dad, Hose' Ayala Ayala, was born. The sudden and lately recognized disease in Carmen was similar to hepaticencephalopatophy, and beyond medical treatment once diagnozes by a family member. Carmen's faith in God was evident by her strength and determination in surviving lymphoma in 1980 and bladder cancer in 2008.

Services will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Matthews Chapel, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, Oklahoma, by St. Charles Catholic Deacon, Deacon Dennis Frazier. Interment to follow at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond, Oklahoma.
