N.W. BRANSON OF PETERSBURG DIES AT OTTAWA

Decedent Was Well Known Throughout Illinois as a Lawyer of Integrity and Ability - He Was a Graduate of Illinois College Class 1857, Was Twice Member of Legislature, and at Time of His Death Was Member of State Board of Law Examiners.

Died, at 8 o'clock Wednesday evening, Feb. 27, 1907, at Ottawa, Ill., Hon. Nathaniel W. Branson, aged 70 years.

The remains will be taken to his late residence at Petersburg, where the funeral will he held at a time to be announced later.

The death of Mr. Branson comes as a great shock to the residents of Sangamon county and throughout central Illinois, where he was well and favorably known as an attornery and a politician. Mr. Branson's sudden demise was the result of an acute heart failure which seized him while sitting in a chair in a hotel in Ottawa.

For many years, Mr. Branson had been a well known lawyer in central Illinois. He was elected a member of the legislature in 1872, and re-elected in 1874, and in the 1876 he gained new honors of being sent as a delegate to the national convention in Cincinnati, which nominated Hayes and Wheeler for the presidency. In 1895 he was appointed a member of the state home for the blind at Jacksonville and held that position for a number years. Soon after his first appointment, he was made secretary of the board.

When the state board of law examiners was created a number of years ago, Mr. Branson was appointed a member, and has since served in that capacity. He was on a mission connected with this board when he was seized with the fatal attack. He was to have assisted at the examination of candidates for the bar in Ottawa today.

Mr. Branson gained prominence as an attorney in the Illinois Midland railroad cases which occupied the attention of the courts a number of ago.

Nathaniel W. Branson was born in Jacksonville, Ill., May 29, 1837. He was the son of William and Jane Branson. He was a graduate of Illinois college class of 1857, and read law in Jacksonville and was called to the bar in January, 1860, at which time he was moved to Petersburg, where he opened a law office.

From that time his rise in the legal profession has been steady, and at the time of his death he occupied a prominent position at the Sangamon county bar, as well as throughout central Illinois. In 1867, he was appointed register in bankruptcy and made his home in Springfield at that time for three or four years.

Mr. Branson was married to Miss Frances D. Regnier, daughter of Dr. Francis Regnier, in 1861.

He is survived by his wife
and one daughter, Miss Ella R. Branson,
who lives at the family home in Petersburg,
and one son, Edward R. Branson, a resident of this city.
