Laurie Matilda was born to William and Rebecca (Young) Ricords on 10 April 1845 in Indiana. She migrated with her parents to Missouri where she married John Earl Atwell on 26 September 1867 in Lanaster, Schuyler County.
They had seven children: Alfred M. Atwell, Edd Atwell, Mrs. E. Walter (Laura) Bird of Mutual, Ok., Ben Atwell of Quinlin, Ok., Mrs. Wave (May) Allen, Taloga, Ok., Mrs. Oliver (Maude) Gardner, Bandon, Oregon. Their son James preceded John Earl in death.
John and Laurie Matilda homesteaded in Webster Township, 6 1/2 miles East of Mutual, Woodward County, OK in 1893. John was part of the last "Oklahoma Land Run".
