Prince Léopold Ferdinand Élie Victor Albert Marie was the second child and only son of King Leopold II of Belgium and his consort, born Archduchess Marie Henriette of Austria. At birth he was created Prince de Belgique and Comte de Hainaut. Upon his father's ascension to the throne in 1865, he gained the title of Duc de Brabant. During the winter of 1869, he was said to have fallen into a pond at the royal residence, Chateau de Laeken, Brussels. The result was pneumonia that shortly proved mortal, he succumbed at age nine years seven months, and he was interred in the royal vault in the church of Notre-Dame de Laeken.
