Contributed by April Carey:
Transcribed from a newspaper from Hurley, Wisconsin, dated February 1913.
Captain S.H. Webb, who died at Great Falls, Montana, on the second of February and who for many years was a resident of Hurley, and one of the pioneers of this range, was born in Cornwall, England, in the year 1838, and was in his seventy-fifth year when he passed from this life to that of the unknown.

He came to this country in his early boyhood and settled at Mineral Point, Wisconsin, working in the lead mines until he was married to Mary Paynter, who bore him several children and who died in Hurley on the ninth of May, 1893.

He moved from Mineral Point to the copper country, settling at the Copper Falls mine, where he lived for a number of years, when he again made a change, going to Negaunee, Michigan, where he held several positions of trust with different mining companies, until he came to this range to take charge of Section 33 mine, which is now a part of the Montreal mine, and continued in that capacity until the panic of 1893 when the mine closed down. He, then, in conjuction with his son, William, went into the wholesale flour and feed business here, in the building now occupied by W.F. Kelley, as the Temple theatre.

He after that went west and had several positions in different mining ventures, going to Alaska for one concern, and putting in several months there when he returned to Tacoma, Washington, where he had left his family. For the past few years he has been living on a homestead near Great Falls, which he proved up on, last October, to the best of our knowledge.

He leaves a wife and six children: Mrs. M.H. James of Calumet, Michigan; W.J., who is assistant to the president of the Detroit Life Insurance Co.; S.D. of Ironwood; Russell of Cle Elum, Washington; Alvin of Tacoma and Mrs. Nellie Kerr of Great Falls, with whom he died.

Many people of this community have reason to feel sorry for the taking away of Captain Webb, for he did many acts of kindness to a number who will always remember him with a feeling of affection. Let us hope that his end was peaceful and happy. Although his remains were buried in Great Falls it is expected the body will be disinterred and brought to Hurley for final interment in the family plot at the local cemetery.

Samuel married Mary Paynter in Iowa County, Wisconsin on June 8, 1858. They had 9 children together before she died in 1893.

Samuel married Mary L. "May" Downs in 1877. They had one son.
