William Bristol was born in Canaan, Columbia Co., NY, August 19, 1775 and died January 4, 1859 in Gainesville, NY. He came to Gainesville (then Batavia) in 1805 and assisted Wm. Peacock, surveyor for the Holland Land Company and then settled at "The Creek". He served as Justice of the Peace, in 1809 and 1811. He served in the War of 1812, and was a Lt. in Capt. Isaac Wilson's company of Cavalry. He was elected the first Supervisor of Gainesville in 1814, a member of the Assembly in 1823. He married Martha Stevens of Worcester, Ma. on February 22, 1807 in Lima, NY. They had six children: Francis S. (Merab Stone), Benjamin F. (Margaret Davis), Mary S. (John Lawrence), Lamira (George Harrington), William (Adelia Lockwood, Martha Jewett), and Laura (Corydon Doolittle).Burial took place in Maple Grove, Gainesville.
