William E. Coul was the superintendent of the Philadelphia Gravel claim and later was engaged in mining at Yankee Hill. He passed away near Columbia on Sunday, January 5, 1902. He was 36. He was afflicted with a complication of diseases,including Brights disease, which followed an attack of rheumatism. A native of Nova Scotia. He was survived by his widow, the former Emma Grace Wing, two sons, Howard and Douglas, a sister and a mother.

Mr. Coul's body was interned in the Columbia cemetery on the Wednesday following his death.
