Note: California Death Index has Mr. Tallmans Birthdate as August 29, 1901. Per his Passport Application his Birthdate is August 27, 1900. Per U. S. Office of Veterans Affairs office his Birthdate is August 23, 1900. According to his daughter his correct date of birth is August 29, 1900.

Commander Donald Rex Tallman is the son of William Henry Tallman and Cora Sampson. Cora is the daughter of Henry West Sampson and Isabella Gregg and they are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale, Mich.

Donald was a career Navy man, graduating from Annapolis when he was barely 21 years of age and retiring about 1947. He worked worked for Dean Whitter and then for Merrill Lynch retiring in 1965.

He was appointed as one of three Aides to President Hoover in October of 1932.

The following article is from a Hillsdale, Michigan Newspaper June 26, 1942.

"Commander Rex Tallman of the United States Navy, one of Hillsdale's native sons has been ordered to report to the Naval War College, Newport, R.I., July 1st, according to information received by his uncle H. W. Sampson here.

The son of a no-less famous father, the late Captain W. H. Tallman, who earned his commission in the Civil War times, Com. Tallman decided on a military career, soon after graduation from high school, when he received, through Congressman J. M. C. Smith, the government naval academy appointment to Annapolis, Md. He graduated from the academy in 1921. One of three naval aides to the President, Tallman served during the latter part of the Hoover and first part of the Roosevelt regimes. Later he took a special course at Newport, and spent three years in China. Since leaving his assignment as discipline director at Annapolis, he has been connected with the Pacific Fleet, first as Lieutenant commander on the Battleship Maryland, and later as Commander of the destroyer, William Ward Burrow. The last assignment was made December 8, 1941, two days after the raid on Pearl Harbor.
Quoting from a recent letter received by the Sampsons, Commander Tallman says: "I have been ordered to the Naval War College in Newport, R. I., I have spent many hours on the vast ocean spaces and hope I can get back there soon, preferably on a combatant ship." Tallman expects to visit his mother and brother in Washington, D. C. before taking up his work at Newport."

He was married to Frances Virginia Waggaman, June 16, 1942. She passed August 19th, 1999 in Coronado, CA and her ashes scattered at sea. They had one daughter.

Donald had 2 brothers and 2 half brothers.

Henry W. Tallman born 1893 in Hillsdale, Mich. I found his date of death and his obituary but to date have been unable to locate his burial. He died in Pompano, Broward Co., Florida , July 6, 1956 and his wife Helen "Nellie" Belgan Tallman died there Jan. 23, 1969. The same funeral home handled their cremation that did the rest of the family's funerals and cremations in Florida and since the rest of the family was sent back to Michigan for burial I am sure Henry and Nell are there as well even thought the cemetery has not record of it.

James Morrisse Tallman, born 1898 and died in 1899 in Hillsdale, Mich.

Half Brothers Charles William Tallman 1868-1895, and Robert E. Tallman, 1876-1896-both of whom were born and died in Hillsdale, Michigan.
