LYONS - Joseph E. Mefford, 79, died Dec. 18, 2007, at Hutchinson Hospital.

He was born Aug. 7, 1928, at Turley, Okla., the son of Roy Lee Mefford and Mary Alice Simmons. He retired in 1985 after 33 years in property tax, real estate and claims with Phillips Petroleum. He graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1946, and Iola Junior College and Pittsburg State University. A resident of Lyons for the past year, he was formerly of Hot Springs, Ark.

He attended Lyons Presbyterian Church and the American Legion in Ellinwood, and was president of the Hot Springs Bowling Association.

He served in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific.

On April 15, 1949, he married Dorothy Maurine Williams in Iola. She died Oct. 27, 2004.

Survivors include: two sons, Stevan Mefford, Amarillo, Texas, Charles, San Antonio; a daughter, Marcia Davidson, Conroe, Texas; and special friend and companion Peggy Richter, Lyons; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: two sisters, Judith Mefford and Joyce Wirtz.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lyons First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Monty Fey presiding. Committal service will be at 1:30 p.m. at Lakin-Comache Cemetery in Ellinwood, with the Rev. Larry Young presiding. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Lakin-Camanche District Cemetery in Ellinwood.

Memorials may be sent to Kansas Cancer Institute at KU, center for Basic Cancer Research or American Cancer Society, all in care of the funeral home.
