John was born on January 27, 1904 in a house on Nicollet Island in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His parents were John and Louise Newman Mathews. His nickname was "Lefty", because he was left handed and had the same first name as his father. The Mathews family frequently moved around in near Northeast and South Minneapolis, finally settling in a house on 16th Avenue South. Lefty and his brother Don both started working for Western Union when they were very young, delivering telegrams. This was before most people had telephones. Lefty spent his entire working life with Western Union.

Lefty lived with his folks most of his life. He didn't marry until later in life, and that marriage didn't work out. He moved back with his mother, to take care of her after all the other kids had moved out. Lefty died on May 6, 1985, and is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
