Layton Neel was born on July 15, 1917 in Clay County, the son of the late Robert Neel and Amelia Proffitt Neel. He was united in marriage to Almedia Beatrice Cox, who preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters, Shirley Hill and husband, Garry, of London, and Mildred Leach, of Richmond, Ky.; a brother, Roy Neel, of Somerset, Ky.; four grandchildren, Amy Gregory, Andy Leach and wife, Becky, Awndrea Newman and husband, Steve, and Garry Dwayne Hill; three great-grandchildren, Rob and Ryan Newman and Dalton Gregory; plus a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing. Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, A.J. Leach. Mr. Neel was a retired custodian at Pittsburg Elementary School and a farmer. He was a member of the Pittsburg Christian Church, and a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. Layton Neel departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, being 91 years, 5 months and 19 days of age. Funeral services with military honors by the local DAV were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Bowling Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bernard Ward and the Rev. Orville Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the Elza Cemetery at East Bernstadt.
