Joseph Allen and Ethel Giles Gage Carpenter were married on 22 Dec 1917 in Lauderdale, Meridian, Mississippi.

They resided in New Augusta a few years and he was working as a carpenter. He was seeking a new opportunity in work to better support his growing family. Hence, they moved to Baton Rouge. Within a few years, his brothers, David, Herbert and Prentiss also moved to Baton Rouge. Joseph Allen Carpenter hoped to apply and work at the Esso Refinery, but was injured on the job and the plans he had were squashed. In the meantime, the family was living on Brookstown Road and he became ill. A doctor up the road was treating him for some sort of gastric pain/infection. It turned out that his appendix had ruptured and that was the cause of his death. Herbert and Prentiss eventually returned to Mississippi and Alabama while David remained in Baton Rouge and retired from the refinery. In his later years, David moved to Alabama, where he died.
