Edgar was the son of James W. and Lana E. Beck. Identified siblings were Laura Alta, Mabel W., and James Beck. Step-siblings were Moselle, Roberta, and H.L. Brisbin. Stepmother was Sarah T. Beck.

On 7 Mar 1940, Edgar R. Beck enlisted in the New Mexico National Guard. On 6 Jan 1941, Edgar R. Beck (B: 1918, Texas), a resident of Curry County, New Mexico, was activated to active duty in Clovis. He was described as single, 5 feet 6 inches, 145 pounds, and a Private 1st Class with the 200th Coast Artillery Corps. In Aug 1941, the 200th was deployed to the Philippines.

Edgar Beck was serving with the 200th Coast Artillery Corps in the Philippines when Imperial Japanese began their invasion on 8 Dec 1941. The 200th covered the retreat to the Bataan Peninsula. With supplies diminishing, American and Filipino forces at Bataan were compelled to surrender on 9 Apr 1942. On 7 May 1942, Sgt Edgar R. Beck of the Coast Artillery Corps was reported as a POW in the Philippines. Edgar survived the Bataan Death March and endured as a POW for 3-1/2 years. In 1945, he was liberated from Osaka Main Camp Chikko, Japan where he was used as slave labor. Among Edgar's military awards are the Purple Heart, POW Medal, American Defense Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Defense Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. On 19 Mar 1946, Edgar married Rosie Amandy Gibson in Portales, New Mexico. He was discharged from the Army on 23 Jul 1946. He was a resident of Boerne, Texas and had been hospitalized frequently at Legion VA Hospital for breathing ailments
