Husband of Nancy Defoor Harper. As a young man he traveled by horseback to Missouri with two of his brothers looking for farm land in Howell County. Jim, however, returned to Georgia and became a merchant. He married Ella Docia McGoldrick, and in 1904 Jim and Ella moved to Tacoma, Washington. In November Ella gave birth to their son, Delmer, but 2 days after the birth died of an infection and resulting seizures. Jim and his infant son moved back to live with his parents in GA. After he married Nancy and moved to College Park, Fulton County, GA, Delmer stayed with William and Leah, and was raised by them and Jim's sister Sallie.

A grocer until his death, Jim and Nancy had four children.
