He is survived by his wife, JoAnn of Petersburg; four daughters, Sherry (Dennis) Claussen of Richland, Washington, Shelly (Gale) Sheehan of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, and Monica Melton and Vickie Lutes, both of Petersburg; two brothers, Harold Dowell of Forest City and Don (Lynne) Dowell of Manito; three sisters, Nancy Himmel of Forest City, Aletha Ott of Kilbourne and Deann (Larry) Shelabarger of Oakford; eight grandchildren, Karen and Kayla Claussen, Luke and Amy Melton, Heather (Brandon) McDonald, Micah Sheehan, Zane Hinds, and Wyatt Knoles; two great-grandchildren, Kaylee Eylar and Kassondra Olsen; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tracy Hinds, and two brothers, Willard Dowell and Robert Lutes.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in WWII, receiving a Purple Heart at Iwo Jima. He was a lifetime member of DAV and VFW. He had worked for US Post office, C&IM Railroad as a brakeman, State of Illinois Commerce Commission, and also was a barber.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Petersburg. He loved sports, managed many softball teams and umpired many baseball and softball games.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 9th, 2009, at 11:00 am at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. Rev. Gale Sheehan will be officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2009, from 3:00 pm till 5:00 pm also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
