Lydia Jane Butts Barnes was born Aug. 2, 1846, at Bowling Green, Boone County, Ind. She was the youngest of seven daughters of Wm. and Nancy Butts. Her father was a Methodist minister for forty years. She gave her heart to the Lord in her early youth and joined the Methodist Church of which she was a member till death. She was also a member of the of the Home and Foreign Missionary societies.

She never ceased to give her best to His service. On June 2, 1873, she was united in marriage to Thomas C. Barnes at Logansport, Ind. To their union three children were born, Harry N., Jesse A. and Cleo Z. She was also a loving mother to Grace and Frank, children of her husband’s former marriage.

She, with her husband, organized many Sunday schools, she giving her services as teacher and organist.

Four years of her life were spent in Tennessee and two and a half years in Texas.

Her sweet Christian influence was always felt where she lived. She is survived by her husband, four children and five grandchildren.

She died January 29, 1920, at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 27 days.
