A mother of two young children and a convenience store clerk are Crystal Springs' latest homicide victims. Both were shot and killed in separate attacks on Friday.

Copiah County, which includes the town of Crystal Springs located half an hour south of Jackson, usually sees one or two homicides a year, coroner Stuart Ellis said. But already, the county has recorded three since the start of 2009.

"It's just a tragedy. It's a sign of the times, it looks like," said Buddy Donahoe, the father of slain store clerk William Luke Donahoe.

"I predict we'll have several of these things happen. It seems like nobody has respect for life anymore."

Around 8 p.m. Friday, William Donahoe was shot one time in the face during what investigators believe was an attempted robbery at Sak-N-Pak on Newton Street, less than a mile from downtown Crystal Springs. He was 29 years old.

There was at least one customer inside the store at the time of the shooting, but no one else was injured, said Police Capt. Gerome LeFlore, the department's acting chief.

William Donahoe had worked for Sak-N-Pak on and off for about a dozen years. His father said he sometimes worried that his son would be the target of a hold-up but also never believed deadly violence would touch his family or his small town.

Police were still searching for his son's killer on Saturday.

LeFlore described the shooter as a slender male.

He is about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and was last seen wearing a black baseball cap, a black and white button down shirt, blue jeans and a black bandanna. Investigators also suspect he may have fled in a vehicle and are looking for an older model, blue Chevrolet S-10 pickup.

Donahoe's death marks the second time this year a convenience store clerk in Copiah County has been shot and killed during a robbery attempt.

On Feb. 6, 18-year-old Stuckey's store clerk Shiva Behal was killed by a man who tried to rob the store owned by Behal's family in Gallman.

U.S. Marshals arrested suspect Arther Lestrick, 29, on Feb. 12 in Pearl.

Also on Friday, Bridgett Angrum, 34, was found dead in her home on Blount Lane by her uncle who had stopped by to check on her.

Because of the severity of her head trauma, officials originally believed she may have fallen and died from the impact.

But an autopsy by the State Crime Lab determined Angrum was shot three times in the face, the coroner said.

"She had two small children, a 2-year-old and 3-year-old who were in the house with her," said Ellis.

The children are now with their grandparents.

The Copiah County Sheriff's Department is investigating Angrum's death. Sheriff Harold Jones could not be reached Saturday.

Crystal Springs Mayor Arthur Evans Jr. said the violence has astounded the city's residents.

"It is hurtful," Evans said Saturday. "In Crystal Springs, we are family-oriented and closely knit. This is something we don't expect very often."

Evans also said he wonders if the country's economic woes, which haven't spared Mississippi, are partly to blame for the recent crimes.

"In these times, things are critical economically. People out there are doing things that just aren't normal," he said.

But LeFlore said he thinks robberies are more closely tied to illegal drug activity than a recession.

"I won't necessarily blame this on the economy," LeFlore said. "It's probably more drug-related than anything."
