Waldo Emerson Proffitt passed away February 8, 2009, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon, Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the Myers Funeral Home in Wellsville. Rev. John Ray will officiate. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Edgar, Tom Edgar, Nick Krekeler, David Proffitt, Dennis Proffitt and Rick Proffitt. Burial will be in the Wellsville Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Waldo and his wife, Madalyn Lewis Proffitt, lived in Wellsville during their early retirement years, being active in the Wellsville United Methodist/Presbyterian Church and enjoying many friends. Waldo, named for his father, was born near Jonesburg, Missouri , on September 10, 1915. He was the second of five children born to Waldo Emerson and Eulah Mason Proffitt, and was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Frances Dothage, Eula Faye Paul and Margaret Virginia Leu as well as their spouses. His brother, John Foreman Proffitt along with wife Beverly, live in Colorado Springs , Colorado .

In 1938, he was married to the former Miss Madalyn Lewis of Wellsville. She was the love of his life, and they enjoyed a happy marriage of over 70 years duration. To this marriage, three children were born: Donna, who is married to Tom Edgar and lives in Austin , Texas; Dennis, married to Judy Laws and living in Phoenix , Arizona , and Richard who is married to Dawn Downer and resides in St. Peters, Missouri . There are six grandchildren ? Rebecca Edgar Melton and husband Jeffrey of Austin, Texas, Jeffrey Randall Edgar and wife Elizabeth of Denver, Colorado, David Gregory Proffitt, and Karen Proffitt McGrath and husband Chris of Phoenix, Arizona, Melissa Proffitt Krekeler and husband Nicholas, and Julianne Proffitt all of St. Peters. Five great grandchildren are: John Edgar Melton, Catherine Elizabeth Melton, Jack Tyler Edgar, Delaney Elene McGrath and Madalyn Elizabeth McGrath. Waldo and Madalyn enjoyed frequent visits to their children and
grandchildren until ill health prevented travel, and then by receiving visits from their family members.

After graduating from Jonesburg High School , Waldo attended Brown Business College in St. Louis . In World War II, he realized a lifetime dream of flying by enlisting in the Army Air Corps. He trained as a C-47 pilot and was stationed at Pomigliano, Italy; as a troop carrier pilot, he flew numerous missions ferrying wounded, dropping paratroopers and supplies. He continued as a Korean War pilot and Adjutant General?s Staff member for the State of Missouri. His honors included Air Medal, Campaigns: Northern Apennines and Po Valley. Before being discharged, he attained the rank of Air Force Captain. He spent the rest of his working days in the meat packing industry, with Independent Packing Co. of St. Louis and later Rath. He retired in 1976 as Manager of Marketing for Rath Meat Packing Co.

He served his country well, was a successful businessman but most of all, his family remembers him as a loving husband and father.
