SAVANNAH, Mo. — Ralph R. Merritt, 95, Savannah, passed away March 6, 2009, at Carriage Square Health Care Center.

Ralph was born on March 4, 1914, near Rosendale, Mo., to Caleb F. and Elsie E. Merritt. He attended elementary school at the Carr Rural District School in Rosendale and also the Owensmouth Elementary School, Owensmouth, Calif., now Canoga Park.

Ralph graduated from the Rosendale High School in 1930. He spent several years working on the family farm and the Ford Motor Company in Kansas City, Mo., in the mid 1930's.

He married Mary Leese on April 25, 1937, celebrating over 71 years together. They started their own farming operation near Bolckow, Mo., and moved to Van Nuys, Calif. in 1946, where he worked as a carpenter. In 1949, He joined the United States Postal Service as a Letter Carrier transferring to Savannah in 1965. Ralph retired from the postal service on December 31, 1976. He was an active member of Central Christian Church and a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Glen.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sisters-in-law, Ernestine Merritt, Savannah, Elizabeth Leese Baum, Semi Valley, Calif.; three nephews, Glen (Cyndee) Merritt, Jr., Rosendale, James (Linda) Leese, Overland Park, Kan., Michael Baum, Semi Valley, Calif.; six nieces, Donna (Jerry) Merritt-McDonald, Cosby, Mo., Diane (Jim) Merritt- Oliver Lenexa, Kan., His caregiver Twyla Leese Jimenez, St. Joseph, Ruth Anne (LeRoy) Bush, St. Joseph, Betty Eychaner, St. Joseph, Almeda Hoffman, Chattanooga, Tenn,; several great-nieces and nephews; many close friends.

Service 1:30 p.m. Monday, Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. Interment: Savannah Cemetery, Savannah. Visitation will begin after Noon Sunday at our chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Central Christian Church.
