Aug. 20, 1913-March 14, 2007 HERMISTON - Former local produce farmer Thomas Nathan Able Jr., died March 14, 2007, at his home. He was 93.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston with burial to follow at the Echo Cemetery.

Mr. Able was born Aug. 20, 1913, in Weiser, Idaho, to Thomas N. Able Sr. and Urania Coombs Able. He was a 1931 graduate of Stanfield High School.

He married Lucy Jane Edmond in 1935 in Union Gap, Wash. They lived most of their life farming in and around Umatilla County. They owned a dairy in Hermiston and Able's Farm Market (later known as Tom Able Farms).

In 1965, they started selling Hermiston melons. Several years later, they built an open air market to sell the produce from their 58-acre garden.

Mrs. Able died in 1994. In March of 2001, Mr. Able married Martha Krause of Nyssa.

Mr. Able was a member of the Echo Methodist Church and the Stanfield Assembly of God Church. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge, the Masonic Lodge, the Experimental Aircraft Association and the 3 Rivers Model A Club. He served for many years on the Stanfield Irrigation District.

Mr. Able is survived by daughters Cecilia Reynolds and Thiry Kassuba; and stepsons Jerry, David, Leonard, Joe, and Ted.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; son Tom; sisters Veda Hansen and June Stephens; and brothers Boone and Pete Able.
