James was one of three brothers who fought in the Civil War. He was taken prisoner during the battles around Atlanta and died in Camp Chase Ohio Confederate POW Camp, where he is buried, (Section 0 Site 1733) His brother John Gamble Conine died early in the War near Richmond. A third brother William Presley survived imprisonment at Rock Island, Ill POW Camp. James' wife was Nancy Catherine Hindman Conine. Son Jimmie was born posthumously.
